Why People Who Suffer from Drug Addiction Use Drugs Compulsively?

It is extremely rare for an addict to doubt his or her ability to stop using drugs without treatment. While some people are successful, many people do not reach long-term abstinence on their own. Sustained drug abuse brings about changes in the brain that remain long after a person quits using. These changes can result in behavioral consequences including a lack of control over the urge to use drugs despite their negative effects, which is a defining addiction trait.

Addiction has an underlying biological component, which largely contributes to the issues that addicts have with achieving and maintaining abstinence outside of treatment programs. There are a number of factors that can bring about severe cravings including family issues, psychological stress due to work, medical issues that include pain, psychiatric disorders, and both social and environmental cues. On many occasions, an individual is not even aware of these triggers. A single factor can compromise abstinence and make relapse more likely.

There are a variety of different environments for drug abuse and addiction treatment that use varying pharmacological and behavioral approaches. As these approaches work on different components of addiction, typically a combination of approaches and medications is more effective than single approaches. Many people who are addicted to drugs have additional health issues as well as family, work, legal, and social problems that must be addressed in a treatment program alongside addiction. The best programs offer a combination of therapies and other services that are tailored to meet addicts’ needs.

Mood stabilizers, psychoactive medications (i.e. antidepressants), anti-anxiety agents, and antipsychotic medications may be necessary for treatment success when patients suffer from anxiety disorders, depression, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. Additionally, most people with significant addiction use multiple drugs. As such, they must be treated for all of the substances that they abuse.
